Radical Militant Islam: A European Cancer, an American Thorn |
Written by James Jacquier
Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, America has been very cognizant of the threat that radical militant Islam (RMI) poses towards our country. We need to understand, however, that RMI does not threaten the Western world uniformly. Otherwise, we risk underestimating our enemy and misplacing our emphasis and efforts. While RMI is a painful thorn in America’s side, in Europe it is a cancer waiting to explode and possibly kill the host.

Racial Profiling: The Solution to Airport Security |
Written by Ryan Burningham
On Christmas Day, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab stuffed his underwear with explosives and boarded an Airbus A330 in Amsterdam with 289 other passengers. By the time the plane reached Detroit, a single terrorist had nearly killed 300 civilians in yet another attack on an airplane over American soil. Despite heavy, invasive airport security, the passengers were saved only by a slight malfunction in the explosive and the would-be bomber’s own incompetence, which illustrated an uncomfortable yet inevitable conclusion: despite its efforts at obtaining security through overseas operations, the United States has failed to establish adequate security measures at home.

Written by Grady Nye
We commonly talk about the politics of fear as though it were a watered-down totalitarian weapon wielded by political parties to sway public opinion.

The Downfall of Russian Democracy? |
Written by Peter Wright
Mikhail Bulgakov, the famous Soviet author, noted his foreboding about the October Revolution and the rise of the Bolshevik regime in a newspaper in November 1919, stating, “We have begun to drink the cup of our punishment and we will finish it to the last drop. We will pay for this.” Tragically, Russians throughout the 20th century paid for the crimes of the Soviet state with enormous amounts of money, guilt, tears, and human lives. Unfortunately, the present path of Russian political culture reflects a reconciliation with (and not a renunciation of) the Soviet past, and the result is a weakening of democracy.

China's Threat to Western Democracy |
Written by Luke Miller
The last 100 years have been defined by ideological struggle between Western liberal democracy and other ideological challengers like communism and fascism. With the demise of the USSR, it seemed that liberal democracy had finally triumphed. However, the conflict to make liberal democracy the world’s preeminent ideology is not over. At least one new challenger has emerged: Chinese “communism.” With its modern mix of authoritarianism and mercantilism, China presents a direct challenge to the globalization of Western values by providing a tempting alternate model of government and by providing material support for dictators.
